While the percentage growth looks good the actual percentage of online advertising dollars spent on mobile starts at only 2.2% in 2009.

Consumers are definitely using their phones but the variation in platforms and hardware make it tough to commit a good bit of money to such a fragmented and rapidly changing medium.

As a result, according to eMarketer, only 11% of brands have it as a line item in their 2010 budgets, 19% are experimenting with it but it’s not in the budget and 36% say it’s not part of their plans.

As the phones get smarter and the browsers get better local search on phones will be the fastest growing segment of this rapidly growing medium.

Lots of opportunity ahead for brands that want to be accessible to their consumers.
