First of all, online display ads are up 22% over 3rd quarter of last year.  And, Facebook is by far the leading player in display ads.

While we spend most of our time thinking about local Google AdWords, we’ve got to keep our eye on all that is happening with Facebook, too.   This chart is an indication of their power.

Now, granted the more people who visit a site the more ad impressions they are going to deliver, no matter the real value of the ad impressions.  So, this chart in some ways is just a list of the most popular domains.  And, Google for now makes most of their money on text ads with display ads being secondary, so they aren’t taking the top spot.

Facebook has its issues (privacy mostly) but with the advent of dealers being able to easily ad “deals” to  Facebook Places, we’re starting to see some opportunity for delivering a brand message via retailers to local markets.  Cheaply.

They’re not there yet, but getting closer.
