Usability Testing
Usability Testing
Reviewing a site against JGSullivan's 150+ point checklist of quality factors gives an incredible amount of data and insight into how a site can be improved. Web and email surveys can collect valuable information on a user's opinions and demographics. User interviews are a goldmine of potential insight into what users expect and experience when using your website as well as other sites. But nothing compares to watching actual users on your site completing actual tasks.
Observational Usability Testing
JGSullivan can design and execute Observational Usability Testing which puts real users (recruited by a professional market research firm) in front of the computer under test conditions to observe them interacting with your site or your competitors' sites to see what works and what doesn't. Every session is videotaped, showing both the computer screen and the user's face, and the tapes are yours at the conclusion of the research.
Observational Usability is often dismissed as time consuming and expensive, but it usually isn't either. A day of testing can see six to eight subjects, which is more than enough to produce substantial findings that can both validate and refine concerns about known issues as well as turn up unexpected new issues.
